Myth: hiding your wireless network’s name improves its security

Many think that what is not visible to an attacker is not going to be attacked. While this might be true for physical security, it doesn’t apply to cyber security.

Security experts name this approach “security to obscurity” because it just hides the name, it doesn’t secure the network.

If a wireless network doesn’t broadcast its SSID, doesn’t mean that it is invisible. It still does broadcast the internal ID of the wireless network without making the name of the network visible. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be possible for any device to connect to it. A hacker with the know-how and the proper tools can find out the ID of the network and still can crack the password.

Instead of improving the security of the network, such a practice just make the lives of the normal users of the wireless network just a bit harder.

In order to really improve your Wi-Fi’s security do the following:

– use WPA2 as encryption protocol

– set a strong password (get the book in order to learn here how to set one)

– create a proper name of your wireless network

– if you know which devices will connect to it, allow only those devices to connect, by enabling MAC filtering and preventing any new device to connect
